Movie Night
Subtitles on or off? Popcorn or pizza? Home or cinema? Movie preferences are oddly personal, and that makes them great conversation material for A2 learners who are still building confidence in English. This lesson plan covers eight vocabulary items including movie genres, trailers, and movie reviews, with a short reading section featuring three people and their very different watching habits. Students compare the profiles, discuss their own preferences, and then work through a three-step speaking task to plan and describe their perfect movie night.

Start with the “This or That” lead-in on slide one. It has eight quick choices, like watching alone vs. with friends or comedy vs. action. Students answer individually first, then share with a partner. Give them two or three minutes, then briefly ask who chose what. This warm-up works well because almost everyone has a movie night preference, so no one feels stuck.
Move to the speaking activity on slide three. Students look at five pictures, blanket, popcorn, big screen, comfortable couch, and drinks, and rank them from least to most important for a movie night. The ranking gets students talking right away because people disagree on this fast. A2 learners can do this with simple phrases: “For me, number one is…” Let them explain their reasons in a sentence or two. This is also a good vocabulary preview moment since the lesson words come up naturally here.
Next, do the vocabulary preview on slide four. Students check which words they already know and explain them in a sentence. Go through the definitions slide together for any unknowns. The eight words are straightforward at A2 level: action movie, animated movie, comedy, movie theater, trailer, subtitles, stay up late, and movie reviews. After checking understanding, students complete the gap-fill on slide five individually, then check in pairs.
The reading section has three short profiles: Marta watches comedies with friends at home, Kenji watches animated movies alone, and Tom goes to the movie theater every month. Ask students to take notes as they read, then complete the comparison table. This table works well as a pair activity. Students can split the reading and share what they found.
Finish with the Perfect Movie Night activity on slides fourteen through sixteen. Students choose a place, a movie, and food and drinks in three separate steps. After each step, they tell their partner their choice and explain it. By step three, they have a full plan to describe. This is one of the better speaking structures for A2 students because each step adds something new without being overwhelming. End with a brief whole-group share.
