Why Is Everyone Maxxing?
Everyone seems to be optimizing something these days, their sleep, their skin, their step count, their morning routine. This B2 lesson takes that trend, known online as maxxing, and turns it into a full class built around a short video, comprehension questions, and a vocabulary set that includes optimize, uncertainty, and push your comfort zone. Students debate when self-improvement crosses into obsession and rank wellness products from worth it to pure marketing. It’s a topic every student already has an opinion on, which makes the discussion move fast.

Start with the lead-in questions on slide 1. Ask students if they’ve ever tried to improve one area of their life, then let a few volunteers share before moving into the maxxing definition and example. Slide 2 works well as a quick pair activity. Students pick two areas of their life they would max this year and explain why to a partner, which gets them using the target vocabulary before you’ve even introduced it formally.
Move into the vocabulary preview on slide 3, then walk through the definitions on slide 4 together, checking pronunciation as you go. Play the video on slide 6 and have students list every maxxing trend they hear, since this feeds directly into the comprehension questions on slides 7 and 8. The true or false activity on slide 5 works well either before or after the video, depending on your group’s confidence with the vocabulary. Slide 10 gives more practice with the same words in a different format, so don’t skip it even when time is tight.
For the second half of class, the discussion questions on slide 11 usually run long, especially the one about when self-improvement becomes an obsession. Let that conversation breathe instead of rushing to the next question. The speaking activity on slide 12 asks students to name specific maxxing trends like step counting or cold showers, so pull in real examples from your own social media feed if students get stuck for ideas.
Wrap up with the extra activity on slide 13. Students rank wellness products from worth buying to pure marketing, and this almost always sparks a strong opinion from someone in the group. It’s a good note to end the lesson on, since students walk out still talking about it.
